Supporting Veterans
Churchill is an organisation that supports veterans transitioning to working in a civilian capacity.
The facilities management industry is known for being a good fit for veterans in search of a new career. It offers challenging work that aligns with the skills service leavers have developed in their military careers. For Churchill, ex-armed forces personnel represent ideal candidates as they often demonstrate the attitude and strategic mindset, that is so valuable and easily transferrable to the roles within FM.
- We first signed the Armed Forces Covenant in 2019, were recognised with the Silver Award just one year after and recently received the Gold award for 2022.
- We already employ a number of ex-service personnel in a variety of roles. Our managing director of operations, Louisa Clarke, is one of many Churchill colleagues who has an ex-service background. After joining the Royal Air Force at 18, Louisa served for over a decade as a Movements Controller. Since joining us in 2011, Louisa has been promoted numerous times, working her way up the ladder from contract manager to MD of operations, proving successful transition from the forces to civilian roles is achievable. Louisa was recently appointed to the Veterans Advisory Board and won the ‘Business Leader of the Year – Large Business’ award at the British Ex-Forces Business Awards.
- We have implemented policies that support colleagues with a reserve or voluntary commitment and veterans in the recruitment process. We work with our hiring teams, training them to effectively engage with applicants who may not be familiar with a job recruitment process.
- We operate a buddy scheme which encourages any interested ex-service personnel to approach Churchill employees with military background for advice, support, and mentoring before, during and after joining us. If you’d like to talk to a fellow veteran before applying for a role with us, please email Ex-Military@churchillservices.com.
- ElevateMe is our management development programme to ensure ongoing development aligned to individual roles and career aspirations.
- Mosaic, our wellbeing, diversity and inclusivity programme, ensures everyone at Churchill has a voice and an opportunity to steer and inform how the company is managed and run. Furthermore, our diversity and inclusivity committee represents all groups from areas of the business, as well as a community programme that supports under-represented groups in our communities.
- In addition to our recruitment and development efforts, we prioritise our connections with the veteran community. Our colleagues are encouraged to support the charities they feel most passionate about. We currently volunteer with the Coming Home Centre veteran charity in Glasgow, and we support Building Heroes, a charity that provides free skills training and support into employment to armed forces veterans.
Darren Rhodes, the Regional Employer Engagement Director at the North of England Reserve Forces’ and Cadets’ Association, said:
“We want to congratulate Churchill Group on being awarded their ERS Gold award. Churchill Group is a company with ex-military at their heart and is creating positive pathways nationally. In the three years since their MOD engagement commenced, the company has credit for two external organisation Armed Forces Covenant signings, an ERS Bronze Award registration and supported an activity to encourage 100 young women in the NE to consider careers in Facilities Management and Logistics within the military. A remarkable range of advocacy delivered in a relatively short timeframe, and during a pandemic!”
